Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (M) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (M, 1999) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth
International man of mystery Austin Powers (Mike Myers) discovers that his nemesis, the diabolical Dr. Evil (also Mike Myers), has invented a time machine and travelled back to 1969 to steal Austin's mojo—his very essence of sexual charisma—while he lay frozen. Racing back through time himself to reclaim what's been stolen, Austin teams up with CIA agent Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham) to thwart Dr. Evil's latest scheme: holding the world hostage with a giant laser aboard his orbiting satellite base, all while contending with Dr. Evil's diminutive clone, Mini-Me, and a colourful cast of new adversaries. As Austin navigates a groovy, disco-fabulous version of the swinging sixties, he must recover his stolen mojo and outwit Dr. Evil's increasingly absurd schemes before it's too late.
Director Jay Roach doubles down on the gleeful, anything-goes absurdity of the original film, packing the sequel with even more elaborate sight gags, innuendo, and parody of spy movie conventions. Mike Myers once again showcases remarkable range across his dual roles, deepening Dr. Evil's comic pathos while introducing the instantly memorable Mini-Me, played by Verne Troyer, as a scene-stealing new addition to the franchise's rogues' gallery. The film's era-appropriate soundtrack and groovy production design lean fully into 1960s psychedelia, while its rapid-fire barrage of jokes—ranging from clever wordplay to gleefully juvenile toilet humour—cemented the franchise's reputation for comedic excess. Embracing pure, unapologetic silliness at every turn, The Spy Who Shagged Me expanded on its predecessor's cult following to become a genuine commercial phenomenon.
