Face/Off (MA 15+) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Face/Off (MA 15+, 1997) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) has spent years hunting terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage), whose bomb killed Archer's young son. When Troy falls into a coma after a failed bombing attempt, Archer learns another bomb is hidden somewhere in Los Angeles, set to detonate within days. Desperate to find its location, Archer undergoes experimental surgery to transplant Troy's face onto his own, infiltrating prison to extract information from Troy's brother Pollux. But when Troy awakens and forces doctors to give him Archer's face, he assumes Archer's identity—his badge, his home, his wife and daughter. Now Archer must escape prison as Troy while the terrorist lives his life, and no one believes the truth. As the two men inhabit each other's existence, the line between hero and villain blurs in a deadly game where face and identity have become weapons.
Director John Woo brings his signature Hong Kong action style to Hollywood with spectacular results. The 1997 film showcases Woo's trademark elements—slow-motion gun battles, doves, Mexican standoffs—while adding emotional weight through the identity-swap premise. Travolta and Cage deliver tour-de-force performances, each mimicking the other's mannerisms as their characters inhabit switched bodies. The film's action sequences are operatic in scale, from the opening airport shootout to the boat chase finale, all choreographed with Woo's balletic violence. The emotional stakes remain high as Archer experiences Troy's criminal world while Troy corrupts Archer's family. Joan Allen brings grounded humanity as Archer's wife sensing something wrong, while the supporting cast navigates the film's audacious premise with conviction. It's high-concept action executed with style and genuine emotional investment.
