The Full Monty (M) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
The Full Monty (M, 1997) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
In Sheffield, England, the steel industry's collapse has left former workers Gaz (Robert Carlyle) and Dave (Mark Addy) unemployed and desperate. Gaz faces losing custody of his son Nathan due to unpaid child support, while Dave's unemployment strains his marriage. When they see women flocking to a Chippendales show, Gaz hatches an audacious plan: recruit a group of local blokes to perform a one-night-only striptease—going the "full monty" to outdo the professionals. They assemble an unlikely troupe including their former foreman Gerald (Tom Wilkinson) hiding his redundancy from his wife, depressed Lomper (Steve Huison), well-endowed Horse (Paul Barber), and older dancer Guy (Hugo Speer). None are young, fit, or natural performers, but desperation breeds creativity. As the men rehearse in secret and confront their insecurities about masculinity, body image, and self-worth, they discover that baring all might be exactly what they need to reclaim their dignity.
Director Peter Cattaneo transforms what could have been mere titillation into a warm, funny examination of working-class masculinity in crisis. The 1997 film balances broad comedy with genuine pathos, never mocking its characters' struggles. Robert Carlyle makes Gaz's desperation palpable beneath his cocky exterior, while Mark Addy brings vulnerability to Dave's body-image issues. The supporting cast creates fully realized characters dealing with unemployment's psychological toll—Tom Wilkinson's Gerald maintaining appearances while his world crumbles is particularly moving. The film's Sheffield locations capture post-industrial decay without wallowing, while Anne Dudley's score (which won an Oscar) perfectly complements the story. The climactic performance delivers both laughs and triumph, celebrating these men's courage to expose their vulnerabilities.
