Space Jam (G, 1996) 30th Anniversary Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Basketball legend Michael Jordan is at the peak of his career when he's approached by the Looney Tunes characters with an extraordinary request: help them win a basketball game against a team of alien invaders. The Nerdlucks, diminutive extraterrestrials who want to capture the Looney Tunes characters for their intergalactic amusement park, challenge them to a game of basketball. If the Tunes lose, they'll be enslaved forever. Desperate for help, Bugs Bunny (voiced by Billy West) recruits Michael Jordan, pulling him into the animated world where the laws of physics—and comedy—operate differently. Jordan must assemble a championship team from the Looney Tunes roster, including Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny, to face the Nerdlucks who have stolen the skills of NBA superstars Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Larry Johnson, and Alonzo Mourning, transforming themselves into powerful Monstars.

Director Joe Pytka blends live-action and animation in this 1996 spectacle that feels like a feature-length commercial yet somehow works as genuine entertainment. Michael Jordan makes his acting debut with surprising charm, playing himself as a fish-out-of-water in the animated world. The Looney Tunes characters—particularly Wayne Knight's role as the sleazy agent—provide comic relief while the film celebrates basketball's athleticism and showmanship. The animation by Industrial Light & Magic seamlessly integrates with live-action, creating a convincing shared world. The basketball game finale delivers genuine excitement despite its absurdity, showcasing real NBA talent alongside cartoon characters. Composer John Williams contributes to the soundtrack alongside contemporary artists. While the film is essentially a feature-length advertisement for Nike and Warner Bros., it succeeds through sheer entertainment value and the charm of seeing Michael Jordan interact with beloved cartoon characters.
