Christmas in July at The Revival House
Home Alone (PG, 1990) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When the McCallister family leaves Chicago for Paris on Christmas Eve, they accidentally leave behind their youngest son Kevin (Macaulay Culkin), an eight-year-old who initially celebrates his newfound freedom. But Kevin's joy turns to terror when two bumbling burglars—the Wet Bandits Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern)—begin systematically robbing homes in the neighborhood. With his family unreachable and police unable to help in time, Kevin must transform his house into an elaborate fortress. What follows is a comedic battle as Kevin deploys an increasingly creative arsenal of traps—from ice on the front steps to paint cans swinging from the ceiling to ornament-filled snow on the roof. As the burglars become more determined and Kevin grows braver, the young boy discovers that protecting his home means standing up for himself and those he loves.

Director Chris Columbus crafts a perfect family film that works for both children and adults. The 1990 movie balances slapstick comedy—the burglars' suffering is hilariously over-the-top—with genuine emotional stakes about loneliness and belonging. Macaulay Culkin makes Kevin sympathetic rather than annoying, capturing both his mischievous joy and real fear when danger arrives. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern commit completely to their bumbling villainy, creating memorable antagonists despite their limited screen time. The McCallister house becomes a character itself, transformed into an ingenious trap factory. John Williams' iconic score features one of cinema's most recognizable themes, setting a magical Christmas tone. The film's heart emerges in Kevin's relationship with his elderly neighbor "Old Man Marley" (Roberts Blossom), reminding us that family comes in unexpected forms.
