10 Things I Hate About You at The Revival House Perth

New student Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is immediately smitten with the beautiful but shallow Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), but there's a problem: Bianca's overprotective father won't let her date until her older sister does. That sister is Kat (Julia Stiles), an acid-tongued feminist who reads Sylvia Plath, listens to angry girl rock, and has absolutely no interest in dating anyone at Padua High School. Desperate to get close to Bianca, Cameron bankrolls a plan: pay the school's bad boy Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to date Kat. What starts as a mercenary scheme becomes complicated when Patrick discovers there's more to Kat than her prickly exterior, and she begins to let her guard down. But as prom approaches and secrets threaten to surface, both couples must confront whether their relationships were built on genuine connection or elaborate deception.

Director Gil Junger's 1999 teen comedy cleverly updates Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew for the '90s high school set, transforming the problematic source material into a sharp, genuinely funny romance about accepting people as they are. Julia Stiles makes Kat's feminist rage utterly convincing while showing the vulnerability underneath, and Heath Ledger is impossibly charming as Patrick—his serenade to Kat on the bleachers with "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" remains one of teen cinema's most swoon-worthy moments. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent, from Gordon-Levitt's earnest romantic to Allison Janney's guidance counselor writing a bodice-ripper. The script by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith balances Shakespeare references with contemporary humor, while the Letters to Cleo soundtrack captures late-'90s alternative rock perfectly. It's a rare teen movie with intelligence, heart, and genuine wit.
