Dick Tracy (PG) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Dick Tracy (PG, 1990) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
In a stylized 1930s metropolis where everyone wears primary colors and drives art deco cars, square-jawed detective Dick Tracy (Warren Beatty) battles organized crime while juggling two women: his loyal girlfriend Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly) and seductive nightclub singer Breathless Mahoney (Madonna). Crime boss Big Boy Caprice (Al Pacino) has united the city's gangsters under his control and wants Tracy dead. When Tracy takes in street orphan Kid (Charlie Korsmo) and refuses Big Boy's bribes, the detective becomes a target. Big Boy frames Tracy for murder while Breathless works her charms, hoping to learn whose side Tracy is really on. As the rogues' gallery of grotesque villains—Flattop, Pruneface, Mumbles, and more—close in, Tracy must stay true to his code while stopping Big Boy's criminal empire and solving the mystery of a shadowy figure called The Blank.
Director Warren Beatty brings Chester Gould's comic strip to life with revolutionary visual style. The 1988 film uses only seven colors in its production design, creating a deliberately artificial world that looks like panels from the strip. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography and Richard Sylbert's sets create a stunning comic book brought to three dimensions. Al Pacino chews scenery magnificently as Big Boy, delivering a theatrical performance that dominates every scene, while Madonna brings sultry danger to Breathless. The supporting cast, buried under prosthetic makeup by John Caglione Jr. and Doug Drexler, creates memorable villains. Stephen Sondheim contributed songs that capture both period and character. Danny Elfman's score adds detective noir atmosphere. It's pure visual spectacle that celebrates its source material's bold simplicity.
