GOODFELLAS (R18+) Presented on 35mm
Goodfellas at The Revival House Perth
From the moment young Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) watches the neighborhood wiseguys from his Brooklyn window, he knows exactly what he wants to be. Growing up in the mob under the mentorship of charming capo Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and volatile enforcer Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), Henry lives the dream—money, power, respect, and the intoxicating sense of being untouchable. Alongside his volatile best friend Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), Henry climbs through the ranks of organized crime, marrying Karen (Lorraine Bracco) and building a life of luxury funded by hijackings, robberies, and eventually drug dealing. But as paranoia, cocaine addiction, and FBI pressure mount through the 1970s and into the 1980s, Henry watches his carefully constructed world begin to crumble. In the mob, there are only two ways out—in a coffin or in witness protection.
Martin Scorsese's 1990 masterpiece remains the definitive organized crime film, a seductive and ultimately devastating portrait of the Mafia lifestyle. Based on Nicholas Pileggi's true-crime book Wiseguy, the film operates with documentary-like authenticity in its details while maintaining propulsive narrative energy through Scorsese's virtuoso direction and Thelma Schoonmaker's razor-sharp editing. Liotta's narration pulls us into Henry's world, making us complicit in his choices, while the supporting performances are uniformly brilliant—Pesci's Oscar-winning turn as the hair-trigger Tommy is terrifying, and Bracco brings fierce intelligence to Karen. The Copacabana steadicam shot, the "Layla" montage of corpses, the helicopter paranoia sequence—these are among cinema's most iconic moments. The perfectly curated rock and roll soundtrack turns every scene into a time capsule of American violence and excess.
