Spirited Away (PG) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM ( Japanese/ENG SUBS)
Spirited Away at The Revival House Perth
Ten-year-old Chihiro is sulking in the backseat as her family drives to their new home when her father takes a wrong turn, leading them to what appears to be an abandoned theme park. Against Chihiro's protests, her parents explore the deserted area and discover a restaurant stocked with fresh food—which they begin devouring despite no one being present. As night falls, Chihiro watches in horror as her parents transform into pigs and spirits begin appearing throughout the park, which is actually a bathhouse for Japan's gods and supernatural beings. Trapped in this spirit world, Chihiro must work at the bathhouse owned by the witch Yubaba, who steals her name and renames her "Sen." To survive and save her parents, Chihiro must navigate this strange realm filled with bizarre spirits, forge alliances with the mysterious boy Haku and the bathhouse workers, and rediscover her identity and courage in a world where forgetting your name means losing yourself forever.
Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 masterpiece won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and remains Studio Ghibli's crowning achievement. The film overflows with visual imagination—from the grotesque yet oddly sympathetic No-Face to the gentle giant Radish Spirit to the soot sprites that swarm the boiler room. Miyazaki draws on Japanese folklore and bathhouse culture to create a fully realized spirit world that feels ancient and alive. Joe Hisaishi's gorgeous score moves from wonder to melancholy to triumph. The hand-drawn animation is breathtaking in its detail, particularly the bathhouse's elaborate architecture and the train journey across the flooded plains. Beyond its visual splendor, the film tells a profound coming-of-age story about a spoiled child learning empathy, responsibility, and self-reliance. This screening presents the original Japanese audio with English subtitles, allowing viewers to experience Miyazaki's vision as intended.
