End of Days (MA 15+, 1999) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Former New York police detective Jericho Cane (Arnold Schwarzenegger), now working as a disillusioned security consultant after a devastating personal tragedy, finds himself thrust into an apocalyptic conspiracy when he's assigned to protect a young woman named Christine York (Robin Tunney). Christine, unbeknownst to her, has been chosen as the mortal vessel through which Satan intends to conceive a child on the eve of the millennium, an event that could bring about the end of the world. As Jericho races against time to protect Christine from a sinister cult and the demonic forces closing in around her, he must confront his own crisis of faith and lost belief, ultimately discovering that saving humanity may require sacrifices far beyond what he ever imagined.

Director Peter Hyams delivers a dark, apocalyptic supernatural thriller that leans into millennial anxiety and biblical mythology, blending horror atmospherics with big-budget action spectacle. Arnold Schwarzenegger tackles more overtly dramatic territory than his typical action fare, playing a man wrestling with grief and lost faith alongside the film's supernatural stakes. Gabriel Byrne brings theatrical menace to his portrayal of Satan, embodying evil with unsettling charisma across the film's shadowy, gothic-inflected New York setting. The film's production design and effects work create genuine atmospheric dread, while its blend of Schwarzenegger's action-star persona with genuinely dark religious horror material offers a distinctive entry in the star's filmography, capturing the particular pre-millennium anxieties that gripped popular culture at the close of the 1990s.
