Tim Burton's Corpse Bride at Revival House Perth

Step into Tim Burton's most romantically macabre fairy tale—a gorgeous stop-motion masterpiece that proves the dead can have more life than the living. This 2005 animated gem reunites Burton with his muse Johnny Depp for a Victorian ghost story that's equal parts melancholy, funny, and surprisingly sweet.

Depp voices Victor Van Dort, a nervous young man in an arranged marriage to Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson). While rehearsing his vows in the woods, Victor accidentally proposes to Emily (Helena Bonham Carter), a murdered bride who's been waiting underground for her true love. Whisked away to the vibrant Land of the Dead, Victor must navigate between two worlds and two women—one living but gray, one dead but full of color.

Burton and co-director Mike Johnson create a visual feast through painstaking stop-motion animation, where every frame required meticulous puppet manipulation. The film's color palette brilliantly inverts expectations: the Victorian living world is drained of color and joy, while the underworld explodes with jazz, personality, and genuine warmth. Danny Elfman's score perfectly balances Burton's Gothic sensibilities with genuine emotion.

The voice cast shines—Bonham Carter makes Emily heartbreaking and hilarious, while supporting players like Albert Finney, Tracey Ullman, and Christopher Lee add theatrical flair. But it's the animation itself that steals the show, breathing soul into puppets and proving that Burton's visual imagination works beautifully in any medium.

A darker fairy tale with unexpected heart—Burton doing what he does best.
