TANGO AND CASH (M) Presented in 35mm
Tango & Cash at The Revival House Perth
Ray Tango (Sylvester Stallone) is an impeccably dressed, Beverly Hills cop with a degree in accounting who takes down criminals through intelligence and style. Gabe Cash (Kurt Russell) is a rough-edged, wisecracking street cop who prefers brute force and gut instinct. They're the LAPD's two most successful narcotics detectives, both with astronomical arrest records—and they absolutely despise each other. When ruthless drug lord Yves Perret (Jack Palance) frames them both for murder, the rival cops find themselves doing hard time in a maximum-security prison filled with criminals they put away. After a harrowing escape, Tango and Cash must put aside their differences, clear their names, and take down Perret's empire. Armed with experimental weapons, outrageous one-liners, and reluctant partnership chemistry, they declare war on the criminal underworld in the most explosive way possible.
Director Andrei Konchalovsky (with uncredited assistance from Albert Magnoli) delivers pure late-'80s action excess, pairing two of the era's biggest action stars in a buddy cop formula cranked to maximum testosterone. Stallone and Russell clearly enjoy playing against type—Sly in designer suits and spectacles, Russell as the scruffy rebel—and their competitive banter fuels the film's comedic energy. The action set pieces are delightfully absurd: monster truck prison breaks, high-tech weaponry that wouldn't be out of place in a sci-fi film, and a climax involving an electrified facility that's basically a video game level. Teri Hatcher provides glamorous support as Tango's sister and Cash's love interest, while Jack Palance hams it up wonderfully as the villain. Harold Faltermeyer's synth-heavy score is quintessentially '80s.
