EVENT HORIZON (MA 15 +) presented in 35mm
Event Horizon - Revival House Perth Event Bio
Strap in for the most underrated sci-fi horror film of the '90s—Paul W.S. Anderson's 1997 nightmare that asks "what if we made a haunted house movie in space?" and delivers one of the most genuinely disturbing answers ever filmed. This is Alien meets Hellraiser, a film so dark and violent that Paramount forced cuts that have never been recovered.
Laurence Fishburne leads a rescue crew to investigate the Event Horizon, an experimental deep space vessel that disappeared seven years ago and has mysteriously reappeared in Neptune's orbit. Joining them is the ship's designer Dr. Weir (Sam Neill), who believes his gravity drive—which creates artificial black holes to fold space—holds the key to faster-than-light travel. What they discover is that the ship didn't just travel through space—it went somewhere else, somewhere evil, and brought something back.
Anderson creates genuine dread through production design and atmosphere. The Event Horizon itself is a Gothic cathedral of metal and shadows, all spikes and brutalist architecture that looks more like a torture device than a spaceship. As the crew experiences increasingly violent hallucinations and the ship reveals glimpses of what happened to the original crew, the film descends into pure nightmare fuel—visions of Hell that even the heavily censored version can't fully sanitize.
The cast sells the terror completely—Fishburne as the pragmatic captain, Neill's unraveling scientist, and strong support from Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, and Jason Isaacs. The practical effects and Michael Kamen's ominous score create an atmosphere of dread that modern CGI can't replicate.
Flawed but unforgettable—horror that actually horrifies.
