The Bodyguard (M, 1992) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC

Former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) is hired to protect superstar singer Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) after she receives death threats from an obsessive stalker. Rachel initially resents Frank's intrusive security measures and his insistence on controlling every aspect of her life—from her public appearances to her personal relationships. Frank's cold professionalism clashes with Rachel's glamorous, spontaneous lifestyle, creating constant friction. But as the threats escalate and attempts on Rachel's life become increasingly dangerous, the barriers between them begin to break down. Despite Frank's strict rule against personal involvement with clients, he and Rachel fall deeply in love. When Frank realizes the stalker is closer than anyone suspects and that Rachel's sister Nicki may be involved, he must make impossible choices between his professional duty and his heart, knowing that one mistake could cost Rachel her life.

Director Mick Jackson crafts a sleek romantic thriller that became a cultural phenomenon largely due to Whitney Houston's incandescent presence and powerhouse vocals. The 1992 film showcases Houston's natural charisma in her film debut, making Rachel both vulnerable and commanding. Kevin Costner brings stoic intensity to Frank, creating romantic tension through restraint rather than overt displays. The film's soundtrack became one of the bestselling albums of all time, with Houston's performances woven seamlessly into the narrative. The concert and award show sequences capture the spectacle of superstardom while building genuine suspense. Andrew Davis's cinematography gives the film glossy professionalism, while the climactic confrontation delivers edge-of-your-seat tension. It's a straightforward thriller elevated by star power and unforgettable music that defined an era.
