THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (M) Presented in 35mm Film
The Blair Witch Project at The Revival House Perth
In October 1994, three student filmmakers—Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams—venture into Maryland's Black Hills Forest to investigate the local legend of the Blair Witch. Armed with cameras and camping gear, they interview locals about the mysterious disappearances and child murders attributed to the witch, then hike deep into the woods to find the ruins where the supposed rituals took place. What begins as a documentary project quickly devolves into a nightmare when the trio becomes hopelessly lost. As tensions rise and supplies dwindle, strange sounds echo through the night, mysterious stick figures appear outside their tent, and something unseen stalks them through the trees. One year later, their footage is found—this is that footage.
Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez revolutionized horror cinema with this 1999 phenomenon, pioneering the found-footage genre and proving that what you don't see is far more terrifying than what you do. Shot for virtually nothing with handheld cameras and improvised performances, the film's raw authenticity creates an oppressive sense of dread that builds to an unforgettable climax. The naturalistic acting—the cast used their real names and genuinely didn't know what scares awaited them each night—makes every moment of mounting panic feel disturbingly real. The brilliant viral marketing campaign that preceded the release convinced many viewers the footage was genuine, creating a cultural moment that transcended cinema. No gore, no monsters, just three people lost in the woods—and the creeping certainty that they're not alone.
