My Big Fat Greek Wedding (G, 2002) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) is a thirty-something Greek-American woman working in her family's restaurant, resigned to a life defined by her loud, tight-knit, tradition-bound family and their expectations that she marry a nice Greek boy. When she falls for Ian Miller (John Corbett), a non-Greek high school teacher, Toula must navigate the collision of two vastly different worlds—her own journey toward independence and self-confidence, and her family's overwhelming, well-meaning, but relentlessly intrusive involvement in every aspect of the courtship and impending wedding. As Ian earnestly attempts to win over Toula's exuberant extended family, and Toula's parents grapple with their daughter marrying outside their culture, the film builds toward a wedding celebration of joyfully chaotic proportions, blending cultures, personalities, and generations into one boisterous occasion.

Director Joel Zwick, working from Nia Vardalos's autobiographical screenplay, crafts a warm, endearing culture-clash comedy that became one of the most successful independent films ever made. Vardalos anchors the film with genuine charm and comic timing, drawing on her own family experiences to create a portrait of Greek-American life that feels specific and lived-in rather than broadly stereotyped. The ensemble cast, including Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan as Toula's boisterous parents, brings infectious energy to the family's larger-than-life presence, grounding the film's culture-clash humor in genuine affection and familial warmth. Though modest in scale and budget, the film's universal themes of family, identity, and the negotiation between individual desire and inherited tradition struck a chord with audiences worldwide, transforming it into a genuine cultural phenomenon and word-of-mouth box office sensation.
