Anora (MA 15+, 2024) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC

Anora, known as Ani (Mikey Madison), is a young exotic dancer working in a Brooklyn strip club when she meets Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the impulsive son of a Russian oligarch. After Vanya pays Ani to be his girlfriend for a week, their whirlwind romance culminates in a spontaneous Las Vegas wedding. But when Vanya's powerful parents in Russia discover their son has married an American sex worker, they dispatch handlers to annul the marriage immediately. What follows is a chaotic night across New York as Ani fights to protect her unexpected fairy tale, refusing to have her choices dismissed or her marriage erased. As the situation escalates from farce to something more desperate, Ani must navigate class divides, cultural barriers, and her own complicated feelings about what she's really fighting for.

Writer-director Sean Baker continues his exploration of lives lived on society's margins with this energetic, empathetic comedy-drama. The 2024 Palme d'Or winner at Cannes and 2025 Best Picture Oscar winner showcases Baker's signature style: naturalistic performances, vibrant location shooting, and genuine respect for his characters. Mikey Madison delivers a breakout performance as Ani, fierce and vulnerable as she fights for agency over her own life. Baker's script balances screwball comedy with sharp social commentary about class, power, and the American Dream. Drew Daniels' cinematography captures both Brooklyn's gritty reality and Las Vegas's neon fantasy. The film moves with propulsive energy while building to emotional moments that earn their weight. Baker proves once again that the most compelling stories often come from perspectives cinema typically ignores.
