The Talented Mr. Ripley (M) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
The Talented Mr. Ripley at The Revival House Perth
In late 1950s New York, Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) is a young man of modest means who survives through small cons and borrowed identities. When wealthy shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf mistakes Tom for a Princeton classmate of his son Dickie, Tom doesn't correct him—and accepts Herbert's offer to travel to Italy to persuade the wayward Dickie (Jude Law) to return home. In the sun-drenched coastal town of Mongibello, Tom becomes entranced by Dickie's life of jazz-filled leisure and his beautiful girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow). As Tom ingratiates himself into their world, his admiration curdles into obsession. When Dickie grows tired of his new friend's intensity and prepares to cast him aside, Tom makes a fatal choice that sets him on a path of escalating deception, murder, and identity theft across Italy. The question becomes: can Tom maintain his web of lies, or will his talented imposture finally unravel?
Director Anthony Minghella adapts Patricia Highsmith's novel into a sumptuous psychological thriller that's as much character study as suspense film. The 1999 production is visually stunning—John Seale's cinematography captures the Italian Riviera in golden-hour perfection, while Roy Walker's production design immerses viewers in '50s La Dolce Vita glamour. Matt Damon delivers a chilling performance as Tom, making him simultaneously sympathetic and monstrous, while Jude Law embodies careless privilege with magnetic charisma. The supporting cast—including Cate Blanchett as American socialite Meredith and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Dickie's suspicious friend Freddie—adds layers of complexity. Gabriel Yared's jazz-inflected score and the film's careful attention to class dynamics create mounting dread beneath the Mediterranean beauty. Minghella constructs a tragedy about wanting so desperately to be someone else that you're willing to kill for it.
