In the ancient world before the pyramids, the evil warlord Memnon (Steven Brand) conquers the free tribes of the desert one by one, aided by the visions of a powerful sorceress (Kelly Hu) who predicts his enemies' every move. Desperate to stop Memnon's seemingly unstoppable advance, the last remaining tribes hire Mathayus (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), a legendary Akkadian assassin, to infiltrate Memnon's stronghold and kill the sorceress. When the mission goes sideways and Mathayus' brother is murdered, his quest becomes personal. Kidnapping the sorceress and discovering she's an unwilling slave to Memnon's conquest, Mathayus forms an unlikely alliance with her, along with a motley crew including a wise-cracking thief (Grant Heslov), a horse thief (Michael Clarke Duncan), and an eccentric inventor (Bernard Hill). Together they must unite the scattered tribes and storm Memnon's fortress to end his reign of terror—and fulfill Mathayus' destiny to become the Scorpion King.

Director Chuck Russell delivers a fun, old-fashioned adventure that launched The Rock's film career as a leading man. This 2002 prequel/spin-off to The Mummy Returns embraces its B-movie roots with gusto, trading the parent film's supernatural scares for sword-and-sandal action adventure in the spirit of classic sword-and-sorcery epics. The Rock's natural charisma and physical presence make him an instantly likeable hero, delivering one-liners with the same conviction as devastating clotheslines. The film's desert locations and practical stunts give the action tangible weight, from chariot chases to fortress sieges.
