CONSTANTINE (M) Presented in 35mm Film
Constantine at The Revival House Perth
John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is a cynical exorcist and demonologist with a death wish, literally—lung cancer from a lifetime of chain-smoking gives him months to live. Cursed with the ability to see angels and demons walking among us in their true forms, Constantine has spent years deporting Hell's foot soldiers back where they belong, desperately trying to earn his way into Heaven after a teenage suicide attempt damned his soul. When hard-nosed detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) seeks his help investigating her twin sister's apparent suicide, Constantine uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the fragile balance between Heaven and Hell. As demons begin crossing over in increasing numbers, breaking the ancient rules of engagement, Constantine must confront his greatest fear: that something apocalyptic is coming, and he's running out of time to stop it.
Director Francis Lawrence's 2005 adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic Hellblazer transplants the story from London to a sun-baked Los Angeles that conceals supernatural darkness beneath its golden surface. The film creates a rich mythology of angels, demons, and the half-breed entities caught between, visualizing Hell as an eternal scorched wasteland that exists parallel to our world. Reeves brings weary fatalism to Constantine's battle against damnation, while Tilda Swinton steals scenes as the androgynous archangel Gabriel, Peter Stormare delivers a show-stopping turn as a dapper Lucifer, and Shia LaBeouf provides comic relief as Constantine's eager apprentice Chas. The practical effects and creature designs hold up remarkably well, creating a theological noir that's equal parts horror, detective story, and dark fantasy.
