Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce), a brilliant inventor and professor at Columbia University, is devastated when his fiancée is killed during a robbery, driving him to obsessively pursue a solution: a machine capable of travelling through time itself. When altering the past fails to prevent her death, Alexander instead propels himself forward through the centuries, eventually arriving in the distant future of the year 802,701. There, he discovers humanity has split into two starkly different species: the peaceful, primitive Eloi, and the savage, subterranean Morlocks who prey upon them. Guided by Vox (Orlando Jones), a holographic librarian who has survived the intervening millennia, and drawn to the courageous Eloi woman Mara (Samantha Mumba), Alexander must confront the Morlocks' menacing leader and uncover the true cause of humanity's fractured evolution, ultimately finding unexpected purpose and healing in a future he never intended to reach.

Director Simon Wells, the great-grandson of original novelist H.G. Wells, brings a personal connection to this visually ambitious update of his ancestor's seminal science fiction story. Guy Pearce grounds the film's fantastical premise with genuine emotional weight, portraying a man whose grief over loss drives him toward increasingly desperate scientific ambition. The film's production design and effects work render both the machine's journey through history and the film's starkly divided future world with striking visual imagination, updating Wells's original class allegory for a new generation. Jeremy Irons brings unsettling menace as the Morlocks' telepathic leader, while the film balances genuine adventure spectacle with the underlying philosophical question at its heart: whether the past can ever truly be changed, or whether purpose must instead be found in accepting what cannot be undone.
