BATMAN & ROBIN (PG) Presented in 35mm
Batman & Robin at Revival House Perth
Chill out! Joel Schumacher's infamous 1997 superhero spectacular is the most gloriously terrible blockbuster ever made—a neon-soaked camp extravaganza that killed the Batman franchise for eight years and gave us Bat-nipples, ice puns, and George Clooney's most apologetic role. This isn't just bad; it's fascinatingly, entertainingly bad.
Clooney dons the cape (and molded rubber muscles) as Batman, teaming with Chris O'Donnell's Robin to stop Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) from freezing Gotham while he searches for a cure for his cryogenically frozen wife. Meanwhile, Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy wants to save the rainforest by killing humanity, and Bane is... there, reduced from comic genius to grunting henchman. Alicia Silverstone joins as Batgirl because why not add another character to this overcrowded mess?
Schumacher cranks the camp to eleven, creating a day-glo nightmare that looks like a disco ball exploded in the Batcave. Arnold delivers ice puns with Austrian determination ("Ice to see you!"), Thurman vamps gloriously as Ivy, and Clooney looks perpetually bemused by what's happening around him. The production design is aggressively garish, the plotting makes no sense, and the Bat-credit card scene remains cinema's most baffling moment.
But here's the thing—it's never boring. This is car crash cinema at its finest, where every choice is the wrong choice made with complete conviction. Director Joel Schumacher later apologized, but honestly? This disaster is too entertaining to hate.
Perfect hate-watch cinema with friends.
