Con Air (MA 15+, 1997) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When career criminal Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) is released from prison after serving time for a crime of passion, he boards a transport plane with dozens of other dangerous criminals being transferred to a maximum-security facility. Among his fellow prisoners are sadistic killer Cyrus Grissom (John Malkovich), psychotic serial killer Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi), and a collection of violent offenders who represent America's most dangerous criminals. When Grissom orchestrates a prison break mid-flight, he and his cohort seize control of the aircraft, transforming it into a airborne fortress. Poe, desperate to return home to his wife and daughter, must navigate the plane's confined corridors while preventing the hijackers from reaching their destination. What follows is a high-altitude battle where Poe's moral conviction and protective instincts become his greatest weapons against ruthless criminals who believe rules no longer apply.

Director Simon West delivers a kinetic action thriller that prioritizes spectacle and mayhem with gleeful abandon. The 1997 film showcases Nicolas Cage's natural charisma and surprising vulnerability as Poe, a man who discovers his capacity for violence when protecting what he loves. John Malkovich brings intellectual menace to Grissom, while Steve Buscemi steals scenes as the terrifyingly unpredictable Greene. The confined airplane setting becomes paradoxically expansive through West's dynamic camera work and editing, with action sequences that defy logic but deliver constant entertainment. Jerry Goldsmith's propulsive score drives the relentless momentum, while the film's willingness to embrace absurdity—from exotic birds to explosive mayhem—makes this guilty-pleasure filmmaking at its finest.
