Rising Sun (MA 15+, 1993) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When a young woman is found murdered during a lavish corporate celebration at a Japanese conglomerate's Los Angeles headquarters, veteran Los Angeles detective Web Smith (Wesley Snipes) is partnered with the enigmatic Captain John Connor (Sean Connery), an expert in Japanese culture and business practices, to investigate the case. As the two detectives navigate the corporation's opaque hierarchy, cultural barriers, and deliberate obstruction, they uncover a web of corporate espionage, cultural misunderstanding, and high-stakes economic rivalry between American and Japanese business interests. Racing against time as evidence mysteriously vanishes and witnesses grow increasingly unreliable, Web and Connor must penetrate layers of corporate secrecy and cultural nuance to determine who's truly responsible for the killing, and why.

Director Philip Kaufman adapts Michael Crichton's bestselling novel into a slick, atmospheric crime thriller that explores 1990s anxieties about Japanese economic influence in America through a noir-inflected murder mystery. Sean Connery brings commanding gravitas and cultural sophistication to Captain Connor, while Wesley Snipes provides a compelling counterpoint as the more skeptical, street-smart detective learning to navigate unfamiliar cultural terrain. Kaufman's atmospheric direction, combined with the film's exploration of corporate power dynamics and cross-cultural tension, situates the mystery within genuine geopolitical anxieties of its era. The film's technological subplot, involving surveillance and digital evidence manipulation, gives the central mystery a technologically prescient dimension that has aged with particular interest.
