Forrest Gump (M, 1994) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a simple man with an IQ of 75 but a pure heart, sits on a bench in Savannah, Georgia, sharing his extraordinary life story with strangers. Born in Alabama with leg braces, Forrest overcomes his disability to become a college football star, a Vietnam War hero, a ping-pong champion, and a shrimping boat captain. Through it all, he remains devoted to his childhood sweetheart Jenny (Robin Wright), whose troubled life takes her down a very different path. Forrest unknowingly influences major historical events—teaching Elvis Presley to dance, exposing the Watergate scandal, inspiring the smiley face icon—all while maintaining his innocent perspective on the world. As Forrest recounts his adventures with his best friend Bubba (Mykelti Williamson), his commanding officer Lieutenant Dan (Gary Sinise), and his beloved Mama (Sally Field), he reveals a life shaped by destiny, chance, and unwavering goodness.

Director Robert Zemeckis transforms Winston Groom's novel into a technical and emotional tour de force that swept the 1994 Academy Awards. The film's groundbreaking visual effects seamlessly insert Forrest into historical footage, while the episodic structure creates a journey through three decades of American history. Tom Hanks delivers an Oscar-winning performance that makes Forrest's simplicity feel genuine rather than condescending, finding wisdom in innocence. The supporting cast provides emotional depth, particularly Gary Sinise as the embittered Lieutenant Dan finding redemption through Forrest's friendship. Don Burgess's cinematography and Arthur Schmidt's editing move fluidly through time periods, while Alan Silvestri's score and the carefully curated soundtrack anchor each era. The film balances comedy, tragedy, and sentiment without becoming mawkish, asking whether we control our destiny or simply go with the current.
