The Green Mile (MA 15+, 1999) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC

In 1935, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is head guard on Death Row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary—E Block, known as "the Green Mile" for its lime-colored floor leading to the electric chair. Paul's routine existence changes when John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) arrives, a massive Black man convicted of murdering two young white girls. Despite his size and alleged crime, Coffey is gentle, fearful of the dark, and possesses an inexplicable healing power. When Coffey cures Paul's urinary infection and revives a dying mouse, Paul begins questioning the man's guilt. As Paul investigates Coffey's case while managing the sadistic guard Percy (Doug Hutchinson) and psychotic inmate "Wild Bill" (Sam Rockwell), he discovers a profound mystery about justice, mercy, and miracles. The truth about Coffey's gift and his crime will haunt Paul for the rest of his unnaturally long life.

Director Frank Darabont adapts Stephen King's serialized novel into an emotionally devastating drama about grace in the darkest places. The 1999 film runs three hours but earns every minute through character development and moral complexity. Michael Clarke Duncan delivers a heartbreaking performance as Coffey, creating a character of childlike innocence and Christ-like sacrifice. Tom Hanks anchors the film with quiet authority, while the supporting cast—including David Morse, Barry Pepper, and James Cromwell—brings depth to every role. The Death Row setting could be oppressive, but Darabont finds humanity and even humor amid the tragedy. Thomas Newman's score and the film's measured pacing create space for reflection on capital punishment, suffering, and redemption. It's a film about witnessing the miraculous and living with that knowledge.
