Three Kings at The Revival House Perth

As the Gulf War ends in March 1991, disillusioned Army reservist Sergeant Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg), ambitious Special Forces Captain Archie Gates (George Clooney), and reckless Private Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze) discover a map hidden on an Iraqi prisoner that reveals Saddam Hussein's stolen Kuwaiti gold bullion. Seeing their chance to escape the war as rich men, they recruit Chief Elgin (Ice Cube) and embark on a rogue mission deep into enemy territory to steal the gold before the ceasefire makes it impossible. What begins as a straightforward heist becomes a moral crucible when they witness Iraqi civilians being brutalized by Saddam's Republican Guard. The soldiers must choose between their fortune and doing what's right, leading them into a dangerous rescue mission that tests everything they thought they knew about war, duty, and the true cost of turning your back on people in need.

Director David O. Russell delivers one of the most audacious war films ever made, blending pitch-black comedy, explosive action, and searing political commentary. The film's innovative visual style—skip-bleached cinematography that creates a sun-scorched, surreal desert landscape—became instantly iconic. Russell doesn't shy away from showing war's brutality, including unflinching sequences of injury and suffering that ground the absurdist humor in harsh reality. Clooney, Wahlberg, and Ice Cube form an unlikely but effective trio, their chemistry carrying the film through tonal shifts from caper comedy to genuine tragedy. The film's critique of American foreign policy and its aftermath remains devastatingly relevant, asking uncomfortable questions about who we help and who we abandon.
