Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (M) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (M, 2003) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth
Blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) teams up with the eccentric, unpredictable pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to rescue Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the governor's daughter, after she's kidnapped by the cursed crew of the Black Pearl. Led by the ruthless Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the crew has been condemned to a horrifying fate—cursed to walk the earth as the undead unless they can reverse an ancient Aztec curse by returning stolen gold medallions and spilling the blood of everyone who took a share. As Jack pursues his own agenda of reclaiming his stolen ship, Will and Elizabeth become entangled in a swashbuckling adventure of betrayal, supernatural horror, and high-seas action, discovering that nothing about Jack Sparrow's motives or loyalties can ever be taken at face value.
Director Gore Verbinski transforms what many expected to be a disposable theme-park adaptation into a genuinely thrilling, imaginative pirate adventure, blending swashbuckling spectacle with supernatural horror elements. Johnny Depp's now-iconic performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, drawing inspiration from rock musicians and drunken cunning in equal measure, revitalised the pirate genre and earned him an Academy Award nomination for a role many studio executives initially found bewildering. The film's practical effects and makeup work bringing the cursed crew's skeletal transformation to life under moonlight remain genuinely impressive set pieces, while Verbinski balances large-scale action sequences with genuine wit and character-driven humour. Klaus Badelt's rousing score, anchored by its now-instantly recognisable main theme, completes a film that singlehandedly launched one of the most successful blockbuster franchises of the 2000s.
