LEGALLY BLONDE (PG) presented in 35mm
Legally Blonde at The Revival House Perth
Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) seems to have it all: president of her sorority, a fashion merchandising major at UCLA, and a perfect relationship with her boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis). When Warner dumps her before heading to Harvard Law School—claiming he needs someone more "serious"—Elle refuses to accept defeat. Determined to win him back, she applies to Harvard Law and, through sheer determination and a memorable admissions video, gets accepted. But Harvard proves far more challenging than Elle anticipated. Her classmates mock her pink wardrobe and blonde hair, professors dismiss her, and Warner has already moved on with the ambitious Vivian (Selma Blair). As Elle struggles to prove herself, she discovers unexpected allies, develops genuine passion for the law, and realizes she's capable of far more than anyone—including herself—ever imagined.
Director Robert Luketic transforms what could have been a simple fish-out-of-water comedy into an empowering story about defying expectations. Reese Witherspoon makes Elle genuinely smart rather than just lucky, showing how her sorority skills—reading people, staying positive, building coalitions—translate to legal success. The 2001 film balances broad comedy with surprising heart, particularly in Elle's mentorship relationship with manicurist Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) and her defense of accused murderer Brooke (Ali Larter). The supporting cast shines, including Luke Wilson as the kindhearted teaching assistant Emmett and Holland Taylor as the intimidating Professor Stromwell. The script by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith is sharper than expected, celebrating feminine culture rather than asking Elle to abandon it. The soundtrack and costume design make the film visually fun while the message—that you can be both feminine and formidable—resonates.
