Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) has lived his entire life in the idyllic seaside town of Seahaven, blissfully unaware that his whole existence has been broadcast live to the world as an enormously popular reality television show since the day he was born. Every person in his life—his wife, his best friend, his neighbours—are actors playing scripted roles, and the town itself is an elaborate soundstage constructed inside a massive dome, all orchestrated by the show's controlling creator, Christof (Ed Harris). As small inconsistencies begin to crack the illusion around him—a falling studio light, a repeated radio broadcast, a stranger claiming to know the truth—Truman's growing suspicion that something is deeply wrong with his world sets him on a path toward discovering the shocking reality of his manufactured life, and ultimately, toward reclaiming his own free will.

Director Peter Weir crafts a prescient, philosophically rich satire that anticipated the coming era of reality television and mass surveillance with remarkable foresight. Jim Carrey delivers a career-redefining dramatic performance, tempering his trademark physical comedy with genuine emotional vulnerability as a man slowly awakening to the artificiality of his existence. Ed Harris brings chilling conviction to Christof, a godlike figure convinced of his own benevolence despite the fundamental violation at the heart of his creation. Weir's meticulous production design renders Seahaven as an unsettlingly perfect, sun-drenched utopia, while the film's exploration of authenticity, free will, and the ethics of observation feels increasingly relevant in an age of constant digital surveillance and manufactured online personas.
