The Lost World: Jurassic Park (PG) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
The Lost World: Jurassic Park at The Revival House Perth
Four years after the disaster at Jurassic Park, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) reveals a shocking secret: there was a second island, Site B, where InGen bred the dinosaurs before moving them to the park. Now that Hammond has lost control of his company, his nephew Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard) plans to exploit the island's surviving dinosaurs by capturing them and bringing them to a new attraction in San Diego. Hammond recruits mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) to lead a small team to document the animals before Ludlow's hunters arrive, hoping to establish the island as a preserve. Malcolm initially refuses—until he learns his paleontologist girlfriend Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) is already there. Accompanied by documentarian Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn), equipment specialist Eddie Carr (Richard Schiff), and Malcolm's stowaway daughter Kelly (Vanessa Lee Chester), they arrive to find the island teeming with prehistoric life. When the two groups' actions trigger a catastrophic chain of events, everyone becomes prey in a fight for survival that eventually threatens San Diego itself.
Director Steven Spielberg returns to his blockbuster franchise with a darker, more intense sequel that trades the original's wonder for sustained suspense. The 1997 film features some of the series' most memorable set pieces: the trailer hanging off a cliff with a cracked glass floor, velociraptors hunting through long grass, and a spectacular T-Rex rampage through downtown San Diego. Goldblum's sardonic charisma anchors the film, his cynical commentary providing the perfect counterpoint to the action, while Julianne Moore brings intelligence and resourcefulness to Sarah. The practical dinosaur effects by Stan Winston's team remain stunning, particularly the full-scale animatronic T-Rex that interacts convincingly with the actors. John Williams returns with a score that builds on his iconic themes while adding new menace. While it lacks the original's sense of awe, this sequel delivers relentless thrills.
