Bugsy Malone 50TH Aniversary  screening at The Revival House Perth

In a 1929 New York where all the gangsters, molls, and speakeasy singers are played by children, small-time hustler Bugsy Malone (Scott Baio) dreams of making it big. When ruthless mobster Fat Sam (John Cassisi) finds his gang under attack from rival Dandy Dan's crew—armed with devastating "splurge guns" that shoot whipped cream instead of bullets—he needs new talent fast. Bugsy gets pulled into the gang war while trying to win the heart of aspiring singer Blousey Brown (Florrie Dugger), all while fending off the advances of speakeasy star Tallulah (Jodie Foster in an early breakout role). As the cream-splattered turf war escalates, Bugsy must navigate friendship, romance, and survival in a pint-sized world of tommy guns, getaway cars, and showgirl spectacles.

Writer-director Alan Parker's audacious 1976 musical reimagines Prohibition-era gangster films with an all-child cast, and the result is pure magic. The young performers commit completely to their roles, delivering Paul Williams' jazzy original songs with impressive showmanship—from the toe-tapping "Fat Sam's Grand Slam" to Jodie Foster's sultry "My Name is Tallulah." Parker's direction treats the material with complete sincerity, never winking at the audience or playing it for cheap laughs; these kids are genuine actors inhabiting a fully realized world of pedal cars, miniature sets, and period costumes. The splurge gun battles are choreographed with the same intensity as any adult crime film, while the songs and production numbers dazzle. It's a one-of-a-kind film that works as both loving homage and inventive original.
