24 Hour Party People (MA 15+, 2002) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan), a Manchester television presenter with grand cultural ambitions, founds Factory Records after witnessing a transformative Sex Pistols concert attended by barely two dozen people who would go on to reshape British music entirely. As Wilson champions groundbreaking bands including Joy Division and later Happy Mondays, and opens the legendary Haçienda nightclub that becomes ground zero for the acid house and rave movement, his idealistic, chaotic approach to the music industry—prioritising art and cultural impact over commercial sense—shapes Manchester's transformation into a global epicentre of musical innovation. Through tragedy, triumph, financial ruin, and genuine cultural revolution, Wilson's unwavering, occasionally delusional belief in Manchester's musical significance charts the rise and fall of one of the most influential independent record labels in music history.

Director Michael Winterbottom crafts a kinetic, playfully self-aware musical biopic that captures the anarchic spirit and cultural significance of Manchester's post-punk and rave scenes with genuine documentary energy. Steve Coogan delivers a charismatic, wryly comic performance as Tony Wilson, breaking the fourth wall throughout to comment on the story's dramatised liberties with knowing self-awareness. Winterbottom's handheld, documentary-style visual approach and use of actual archival footage blur the lines between historical record and dramatic recreation, mirroring the DIY ethos of the music scene it depicts. The film's episodic structure, tracing Factory Records' chaotic journey from punk to rave, captures genuine cultural history with irreverent wit and infectious enthusiasm for its subject's mad, beautiful ambition.
