Sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) have grown up as the latest generation of a long line of witches, their family burdened by a centuries-old curse that dooms any man who falls in love with an Owens woman to an untimely death. While Sally has spent her adult life trying to suppress her magical heritage and live an ordinary existence, Gillian embraces her powers with reckless abandon, eventually finding herself trapped in an abusive relationship with a dangerous man. When tragedy forces the sisters back together, they must reunite with their eccentric aunts and confront both the supernatural forces haunting their family and the very real dangers threatening Gillian's safety, discovering along the way that genuine love and sisterhood might be powerful enough to break even the oldest of curses.

Director Griffin Dunne crafts a warm, whimsical supernatural comedy-drama that balances genuine sisterly emotion with breezy magical charm. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman bring authentic chemistry to Sally and Gillian, grounding the film's fantastical family curse in a believable, affectionate sibling bond, while Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest add eccentric warmth as the sisters' unconventional aunts.
