American Pie (MA 15+, 1999) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Four high school seniors—Jim (Jason Biggs), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Oz (Chris Klein), and Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas)—make a pact to lose their virginity before graduation, spurred on by the looming reality that adulthood and college are about to scatter their close-knit friendship. As prom night approaches, each young man pursues his own increasingly awkward, embarrassing, and heartfelt path toward the pact's goal, navigating fumbled attempts at seduction, miscommunication with the young women in their lives, and no shortage of mortifying mishaps along the way. Guided by Jim's well-meaning but painfully candid father (Eugene Levy) and egged on by their sharp-tongued friend Stifler (Seann William Scott), the group's raunchy quest gradually gives way to something more sincere: a coming-of-age story about vulnerability, honesty, and the anxieties of growing up.

Directors Paul Weitz and Chris Weitz balance the film's gleefully raunchy set pieces with genuine warmth and character-driven comedy, avoiding pure crudeness in favour of a surprisingly earnest look at teenage insecurity around sex and intimacy. The ensemble cast's easy chemistry became a defining feature of the film's appeal, with Jason Biggs's hapless charm and Eugene Levy's deadpan delivery as his father earning particular affection from audiences. The film's frank, unfiltered approach to teenage sexuality was considered daring for mainstream studio comedy at the time, helping usher in a wave of raunchy coming-of-age films that followed in its wake. Beneath the gross-out gags and now-iconic moments, American Pie endures because of its genuine affection for its characters, treating their fumbling, awkward journey toward adulthood with more heart than its reputation might suggest.
