Apollo 13 (PG, 1995) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

In April 1970, NASA astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon), and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) launch toward the moon on what should be a routine mission—until an oxygen tank explosion cripples their spacecraft 200,000 miles from Earth. With their lunar landing abandoned and their survival suddenly uncertain, the astronauts must work with Mission Control in Houston, led by flight director Gene Kranz (Ed Harris), to engineer a series of improvised solutions using only the limited equipment aboard their crippled craft. As oxygen dwindles, temperatures drop, and time runs out, the mission transforms from a journey to the moon into a desperate fight to bring three men home alive, testing the ingenuity, discipline, and resolve of everyone involved both in space and on the ground.

Director Ron Howard delivers a taut, meticulously crafted docudrama that transforms a well-documented historical event into gripping, edge-of-your-seat cinema. Tom Hanks anchors the film with a performance of quiet authority and mounting desperation, while Ed Harris earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Kranz's unflinching determination under pressure. Howard's direction favors technical authenticity and procedural detail over Hollywood embellishment, immersing audiences in the real engineering challenges and split-second decisions that defined the actual rescue. The film's production design and effects work recreate the claustrophobic confines of the spacecraft with striking realism, while James Horner's score elevates the emotional stakes without overwhelming the film's grounded, fact-based tension. The result is a celebration of human ingenuity and teamwork under the most extreme circumstances imaginable.
