Troy (M, 2004) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

In ancient Greece, the Trojan War begins when Paris (Orlando Bloom), prince of Troy, abducts Helen (Diane Kruger), wife of Spartan king Menelaus (Matthew Marsden). To reclaim her honor, the Greeks assemble a massive army led by the ruthless Agamemnon (Brian Cox), with the legendary warrior Achilles (Brad Pitt) as their greatest asset. The Greeks lay siege to the walled city of Troy for ten years, where Hector (Eric Bana), noble prince and commander of the Trojan forces, defends his homeland with honor and skill. As the war drags on, personal vendettas emerge—Achilles pursues glory and immortal fame above all else, even loyalty to his king, while Hector fights to protect his family and city. The conflict becomes as much about the clash between two great warriors as about the geopolitical stakes, culminating in a legendary duel that will determine the fate of Troy and define both men's legacies forever.

Director Wolfgang Petersen brings epic scope and visceral action to Homer's Iliad, transforming ancient myth into sprawling historical spectacle. The 2004 film showcases elaborate battle sequences—from the famous thousand ships arriving on Troy's shores to massive cavalry charges and hand-to-hand combat—that demonstrate early 2000s action filmmaking at impressive scale. Brad Pitt delivers a charismatic, if occasionally one-note, performance as the warrior driven by ego and desire for glory, while Eric Bana brings nobility and tragic depth to Hector, the film's true moral center. Sean Bean, Peter O'Toole, and the supporting cast add texture to the epic. The cinematography by Roger Pratt captures Mediterranean landscapes and the grandeur of ancient warfare, while the production design creates convincing recreations of legendary Troy. While some criticize the film's liberties with Homer and occasional Hollywood schmaltz, it succeeds as spectacular adventure celebrating warrior culture and the terrible beauty of conflict.
