Jumanji (PG, 1995) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When twelve-year-old Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) opens a mysterious jungle-themed board game in 1969, he becomes sucked into the game's magical world and disappears without a trace. Twenty-six years later, siblings Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce) discover the same game in Alan's abandoned house. When they play, Alan is mysteriously released from the game, emerging as an adult (still played by Williams) with no memory of the decades he spent trapped in the jungle. But the game isn't finished with them—every move they make unleashes dangerous animals and jungle obstacles into the suburban New England town. As they race to finish the game before it's too late, Alan, Judy, and Peter must navigate stampeding rhinos, giant pythons, and the game's most dangerous element: the hunter Van Pelt (Jonathan Hyde), a manifestation of the game's hostile wilderness determined to stop them from winning.

Director Joe Johnston crafts a visually inventive family adventure that blends practical animatronics with groundbreaking early CGI to create a fully realized jungle brought into suburbia. The 1995 film works because it takes its magical premise seriously, treating the game's rules and consequences as genuinely threatening rather than merely whimsical. Robin Williams brings surprising pathos to Alan, a man traumatized by decades of isolation who must function in a world that's moved on without him. Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce make the sibling protagonists genuinely sympathetic, particularly in their navigation of family tragedy and reconciliation. The action sequences—from the stampede to the giant crocodile encounter—deliver genuine thrills and excitement. John Williams' adventurous score captures both wonder and danger. The film succeeds as both children's entertainment and legitimately thrilling adventure.
