Ferris Bueller's Day Off (PG) 40th Anniversary PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (PG, 1986) 40th Anniversary Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
On a beautiful spring day in Chicago, high school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) decides to skip school for the ninth time. But this isn't just any sick day—Ferris orchestrates an elaborate scheme to spring his hypochondriac best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) and girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) from school for one perfect day of freedom. While Ferris's sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey) seethes with resentment and Dean of Students Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones) attempts to catch Ferris in his lie, the trio embarks on an adventure through Chicago: catching a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, dining at an upscale restaurant, visiting the Art Institute, and commandeering a parade. But the day becomes more than just hooky when the anxious Cameron must confront his fears about his overbearing father and his own uncertain future. As Ferris races against time to get home before his parents, he reminds everyone watching to stop and look around once in a while, or life will pass you by.
Writer-director John Hughes creates his most exuberant and life-affirming film, a love letter to youth and seizing the moment. Matthew Broderick's Ferris breaks the fourth wall with conspiratorial charm, making audiences co-conspirators in his elaborate schemes. The 1986 film works because beneath the comedy lies genuine heart—Cameron's arc about confronting fear and finding courage gives the day real stakes beyond just avoiding trouble. Alan Ruck delivers the film's emotional core, while Jeffrey Jones provides perfect comic antagonism as the obsessed dean. The Chicago locations—from Wrigley to the Sears Tower—make the city itself a character. The parade sequence, with Ferris lip-syncing "Twist and Shout," captures pure joy. It's a film about friendship, freedom, and the bittersweet awareness that these golden days won't last forever.
