Fatal Attraction (M) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Fatal Attraction (M, 1987) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
Manhattan lawyer Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) has what appears to be a perfect life: a loving wife Beth (Anne Archer), a young daughter, and a successful career. When Beth and their daughter spend a weekend out of town, Dan has a brief affair with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), a book editor he meets at a business function. What Dan assumes is a casual fling becomes a nightmare when Alex refuses to accept it's over. Her phone calls escalate to obsessive behavior, then to self-harm, and finally to outright stalking. As Alex insinuates herself into Dan's life—befriending his wife, threatening his family, and demonstrating increasingly unhinged behavior—Dan realizes his moment of weakness has unleashed forces he cannot control. His attempts to reason with Alex only fuel her obsession, leading to a violent confrontation that will test everything Dan holds dear.
Director Adrian Lyne's 1987 thriller became a cultural phenomenon, igniting fierce debates about gender, infidelity, and the consequences of casual affairs. Glenn Close delivers a tour-de-force performance, making Alex both terrifying and tragically human—a woman whose desperation curdles into dangerous obsession. Michael Douglas perfectly captures the entitled husband whose life unravels through his own poor choices. The film's power lies in how it transforms domestic spaces into battlegrounds of psychological warfare. Howard Atherton's cinematography creates an atmosphere of mounting dread, while Maurice Jarre's score heightens the tension. The studio-mandated ending differs from the original, more ambiguous conclusion, but the film's impact on popular culture remains undeniable. It's a thriller that examines masculine fear and feminine rage with uncomfortable intensity.
