Lady and the Tramp (G) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
Lady and the Tramp (G, 1955) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth in partnership with RAC
Lady is a pampered American Cocker Spaniel living a comfortable life with her loving owners Jim Dear and Darling in a peaceful American town. When a baby arrives and Lady's world changes, she finds herself muzzled and confused after a misunderstanding with protective Aunt Sarah and her mischievous Siamese cats. Breaking free, Lady flees into the streets where she encounters Tramp, a streetwise mutt who lives by his wits and freedom. Tramp shows Lady a different world beyond her comfortable home—from romantic dinners in Italian restaurant alleys to the dangers of the city dog pound. As their unlikely romance blossoms, Lady must decide between her secure domestic life and the exciting freedom Tramp represents, while Tramp faces his own choice about whether to give up his vagrant lifestyle. When a rat threatens the baby, both dogs get the chance to prove where they truly belong.
Directors Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, and Hamilton Luske craft Disney's first animated feature in CinemaScope widescreen, creating a romance that works as both adorable dog story and surprisingly mature relationship drama. The 1955 film's animation captures canine behavior with remarkable accuracy—the way dogs move, interact, and perceive their world feels authentic. The famous spaghetti dinner scene remains one of animation's most romantic moments, while the film's depiction of the dog pound adds surprising darkness. The voice work brings personality to the animals without making them feel overly anthropomorphized. Peggy Lee voices multiple characters and co-wrote several songs that capture both romance and jazzy energy. The film's class commentary—privileged purebred versus scrappy mutt—adds thematic depth to the love story, while the ending satisfies without betraying either character's essential nature.
