Ponyo (G) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM (English Dub)
Ponyo at The Revival House Perth
A magical goldfish named Ponyo, daughter of the ocean wizard Fujimoto and the sea goddess Gran Mamare, longs to experience the human world above the waves. When she escapes her father's underwater domain in a glass jar and washes ashore, she's rescued by five-year-old Sosuke, who lives on a cliff overlooking the Inland Sea with his mother Lisa. Sosuke names her Ponyo and the two form an instant bond, but Fujimoto retrieves his daughter and returns her to the ocean depths. Ponyo's love for Sosuke is so powerful that she uses her father's magic to transform herself into a human girl, inadvertently unleashing ancient ocean magic that threatens to flood the world and unbalance the cosmic forces between land and sea. As the moon draws dangerously close to Earth and prehistoric fish swim through Sosuke's town, Ponyo and Sosuke must prove that their love is strong enough to restore balance—or risk catastrophe.
Hayao Miyazaki's 2008 masterpiece reimagines Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" as a joyous celebration of childhood innocence and elemental magic. The hand-drawn animation is breathtaking in its fluidity—particularly the tsunami sequence where Ponyo runs across giant fish-waves, rendered in thousands of individually drawn frames. Miyazaki embraces a looser, more expressionistic style that evokes children's picture books, filling the screen with saturated watercolors and kinetic energy. Joe Hisaishi's exuberant score, featuring the addictive "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" theme, captures pure childlike wonder. The film celebrates rather than fears Ponyo's ocean magic, treating the flood as adventure rather than disaster. Unlike traditional fairy tales, there's no villain—only forces of nature seeking balance. The relationship between Ponyo and Sosuke radiates genuine five-year-old affection and loyalty, making this Miyazaki's most innocent and life-affirming work. This screening presents the Film in Englished Dubbed.
