Howl's Moving Castle (PG) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM (Japanese/ENG SUBS)
Howl's Moving Castle at The Revival House Perth
Young Sophie works in her late father's hat shop, living a quiet, unremarkable life until a chance encounter with the mysterious wizard Howl draws the ire of the jealous Witch of the Waste. Cursed to become a ninety-year-old woman, Sophie flees her town and stumbles upon Howl's enchanted moving castle—a mechanical marvel that walks on chicken legs across the countryside. Inside, she meets the fire demon Calcifer, bound by contract to power the castle, and Howl's young apprentice Markl. Sophie takes on the role of cleaning lady, bringing order to the chaotic household while hiding her curse. As war looms across the land and Howl is summoned by the royal court to fight, Sophie discovers her new elderly form gives her unexpected courage to stand up for herself and those she cares about. But Howl harbors dark secrets of his own, and saving him may require Sophie to break Calcifer's contract and risk everything.
Hayao Miyazaki adapts Diana Wynne Jones's novel into a breathtaking anti-war fantasy that showcases Studio Ghibli's animation at its most imaginative. The 2004 film's mechanical castle is a steampunk wonder that walks, flies, and transforms, while Miyazaki fills every frame with inventive details—flying warships, blob-like demons, and the magical door that opens onto four different locations. Joe Hisaishi's magnificent score soars from whimsical to majestic, particularly the beloved "Merry-Go-Round of Life" waltz. Beneath the fantasy adventure lies Miyazaki's meditation on aging, self-worth, and the futility of war. The hand-drawn animation creates tactile beauty in everything from Sophie's transformation to Howl's feathered metamorphosis, proving traditional animation remains unmatched for emotional impact. This screening presents the original Japanese audio with English subtitles.
