RoboCop at The Revival House Perth

In a crime-ridden near-future Detroit, mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products runs the police force and plans to demolish the decaying city to build the gleaming utopia of Delta City. When dedicated cop Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) transfers to the most dangerous precinct, he's brutally murdered by crime lord Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) and his gang in an abandoned steel mill. OCP seizes the opportunity to test their new law enforcement product: RoboCop, a cyborg that combines a human brain with titanium armor and computer programming. The experiment seems successful as RoboCop dispenses justice with ruthless efficiency, but fragments of Murphy's memories begin surfacing—his wife, his son, his murder. As Murphy's humanity fights against his programming, he uncovers a conspiracy connecting Boddicker to OCP's senior management. The question becomes: is there enough of the man left inside the machine to fight back?

Director Paul Verhoeven's 1987 masterpiece operates as visceral action film, biting corporate satire, and Christ allegory simultaneously. The Dutch filmmaker brings his trademark unflinching violence—Murphy's death scene remains one of cinema's most brutal—while satirizing American media culture through fake commercials and news broadcasts. Peter Weller's performance is remarkable; despite being encased in an inflexible suit, he conveys Murphy's humanity through minimal movement and vocal inflection. The film's genius lies in making RoboCop simultaneously a power fantasy and tragedy—he's an unstoppable enforcer who can never return to his family. Rob Bottin's practical effects and suit design hold up beautifully, while Basil Poledouris' triumphant score becomes increasingly ironic as Murphy's tragedy deepens. Verhoeven balances explosive action with pointed social commentary about privatization, corporate greed, and what makes us human.
