Scream 30th Anniversary Screening at The Revival House Perth

Three decades after revolutionizing horror cinema, Wes Craven's game-changing slasher returns to celebrate its 30th anniversary. In the quiet town of Woodsboro, California, high school student Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is still haunted by the brutal murder of her mother one year earlier. When two classmates are savagely killed by a masked assailant who calls his victims before attacking, Sidney becomes the primary target of the killer known as Ghostface. As the body count rises and panic grips the community, Sidney and her friends—horror movie fanatic Randy (Jamie Kennedy), tabloid reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Sidney's boyfriend Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich)—try to survive while small-town cop Dewey Riley (David Arquette) investigates. Everyone is a suspect, and the killer seems to be following the rules of horror movies—which Randy helpfully explains as the terror unfolds. But in a game where knowing the rules might not be enough to survive, Sidney must confront not only the masked killer but the traumatic secrets of her past.

Director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson revolutionized horror cinema with this 1996 meta-slasher that simultaneously celebrated and deconstructed the genre. By having characters who've seen Halloween and Friday the 13th and know the "rules" of horror movies, Scream created a new template: self-aware terror that could deliver genuine scares while commenting on itself. The opening sequence with Drew Barrymore remains one of horror's most effective fake-outs, while the film's whodunit structure keeps audiences guessing until the climactic reveal. Marco Beltrami's shrieking score and Mark Irwin's cinematography balance stylish composition with raw intensity. The ensemble cast commits fully, particularly Campbell's transformation from victim to survivor. Thirty years later, Scream's influence echoes through every modern horror film that dares to be clever, and its central question—what's your favorite scary movie?—remains iconic.
