GODZILLA (M) Presented in 35mm Film
Godzilla at The Revival House Perth
When a series of mysterious attacks devastates fishing fleets in the South Pacific, nuclear scientist Dr. Niko Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) is recruited to investigate what the French secret service already suspects: decades of nuclear testing have created something unprecedented. That something arrives in spectacular fashion when a 300-foot irradiated lizard emerges from the ocean and heads straight for Manhattan. As Godzilla tears through the city with terrifying speed and cunning, leaving destruction in his wake, the U.S. military struggles to stop a creature that defies all conventional weapons. Tatopoulos teams up with his ex-girlfriend, ambitious reporter Audrey Timmonds (Maria Pitillo), mysterious French agent Philippe Roaché (Jean Reno), and cameraman Animal (Hank Azaria) to uncover Godzilla's true purpose—and the horrifying discovery that Manhattan's destruction is just the beginning.
Director Roland Emmerich brings his disaster movie expertise to Toho's iconic kaiju, reimagining Godzilla as a swift, animalistic predator rather than the lumbering force of nature from Japanese cinema. The 1998 film showcases groundbreaking CGI and practical effects that bring the massive creature to life with remarkable detail, from his thunderous footsteps shaking the city to his whip-like tail demolishing buildings. The film's standout sequence—a pulse-pounding chase through Madison Square Garden filled with newly hatched offspring—delivers pure monster movie thrills. David Arnold and Michael Kamen's rousing score captures both the spectacle and terror, while the destruction of New York landmarks provides jaw-dropping set pieces. Though divisive among purists, this American Godzilla remains a spectacular creature feature of its era.
