When a notorious Russian mobster is killed in an FBI sting operation, his vengeful brother hires the world's most elusive and deadly assassin—known only as "The Jackal" (Bruce Willis)—to execute a high-profile political assassination in America. With virtually no information about the killer except his ruthless efficiency and mastery of disguise, the FBI and Russian intelligence form an uneasy alliance to stop him. Their only hope is recruiting imprisoned Irish terrorist Declan Mulqueen (Richard Gere), who once crossed paths with The Jackal years earlier. As Deputy FBI Director Carter Preston (Sidney Poitier) reluctantly releases Mulqueen to help track the assassin, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse unfolds across America. The Jackal stays multiple steps ahead, methodically preparing his devastating plan while Mulqueen and agent Valentina Koslova (Diane Venora) race to identify his target before time runs out.

Director Michael Caton-Jones crafts a taut thriller that updates Frederick Forsyth's classic novel The Day of the Jackal for the modern era. Willis delivers a chilling performance against type as the cold, calculating killer, transforming his appearance and accent with chameleon-like precision—from flamboyant nightclub patron to steely-eyed sniper. Gere brings roguish charm and genuine gravitas to the reluctant hero, while Poitier adds gravitas as the operation's commanding presence. The film's standout sequence features The Jackal assembling a custom-built, remote-controlled heavy weapon—a scene of mechanical precision that builds unbearable tension. Carter Burwell's propulsive score drives the action forward while maintaining the film's European thriller sophistication.
