The Princess Bride (PG) PRESENTED IN 35MM FILM
The Princess Bride (PG, 1987) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth
In a fairy tale kingdom, the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) falls in love with the farmboy Westley (Cary Elwes), but he's taken away by the Dread Pirate Roberts and presumed dead. Heartbroken, Buttercup agrees to marry the evil Prince Humperdinck (Christopher Guest), though her heart belongs to her lost love. On the way to her wedding, Buttercup is kidnapped by three unlikely conspirators: the gentle giant Fezzik (André the Giant), the cynical swordsman Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), and the scheming Sicilian Vizzini (Wallace Shawn). When a mysterious masked man pursues them, Buttercup recognizes him as Westley, miraculously alive. Together, this unlikely group must stop Humperdinck's wedding plans and rescue Buttercup from a terrible fate, all while Inigo seeks revenge against the six-fingered man who murdered his father.
Director Rob Reiner brings William Goldman's beloved novel to vivid life in this 1987 fairy tale that celebrates wit, adventure, and true love. The film's greatest achievement is its script—Goldman's dialogue crackles with humor, from Vizzini's repeated use of "inconceivable!" to Inigo's legendary line about his father's killer. The performances are uniformly wonderful: Cary Elwes and Robin Wright make Westley and Buttercup genuinely sympathetic despite their fairy tale simplicity, Mandy Patinkin brings passionate intensity to Inigo's quest for revenge, and André the Giant proves surprisingly gentle and touching as the giant with a good heart. The film balances adventure, romance, and comedy with remarkable skill, never losing sight of the emotional stakes beneath the whimsy. The sword fights are choreographed with elegance, the special effects (including the Fire Swamp creatures) feel tactile and real, and the film's pacing never flags across its 98 minutes.
