World War Z (M, 2013) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

When a global zombie pandemic suddenly erupts, former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is forced out of retirement to help the world understand the outbreak's origin and find a cure. Separated from his family, Gerry travels across the globe—from South Korea to Jerusalem to Russia—following leads about patient zero and the virus's spread. Everywhere he goes, society has collapsed into chaos as billions of zombies overwhelm human defenses. Gerry discovers that the zombies operate on hive-mind principles, moving as coordinated swarms that can scale walls and overwhelm fortifications through sheer numbers. As governments fall and militaries prove ineffective, Gerry must piece together clues about the virus's origins while navigating zombie-infested war zones, political intrigue, and the fundamental question of whether humanity can survive when civilization itself has become a liability.

Director Marc Forster transforms Max Brooks' sprawling, multi-perspective novel into a globe-trotting action thriller that prioritizes spectacle over social commentary. The 2013 film showcases Brad Pitt's capable everyman heroism as Gerry, a man thrust into impossible circumstances who survives through intelligence and determination rather than superhuman abilities. The zombie sequences are genuinely impressive—massive swarms moving with unsettling coordination, particularly the famous sequence of zombies scaling the Jerusalem wall. The film's international scope—from Seoul to Jerusalem to Wales—provides visual variety while emphasizing the pandemic's truly global scale. The action is kinetically choreographed, balancing large-scale set pieces with intimate survival sequences. Danny Elfman's propulsive score drives the relentless momentum. While the film sacrifices Brooks' nuanced geopolitical commentary for straightforward action-thriller beats, it succeeds as entertaining spectacle that asks urgent questions about pandemic preparedness and human resilience.
