What a Girl Wants (G, 2003) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth

Daphne Reynolds (Amanda Bynes) is a spirited, independent American teenager living in New York with her mother Libby (Anna Chancellor), a wedding gown designer. When Daphne discovers that her father Henry (Oliver James), whom she's never met, is actually a famous British politician living in London, she impulsively boards a plane to find him. Arriving unannounced, Daphne throws her father's carefully controlled political campaign into chaos—she's charming, spontaneous, and completely unapologetic about being the illegitimate daughter he kept secret. As Henry struggles to balance his political ambitions with his newfound relationship with his daughter, Daphne befriends the cynical and damaged Oliver James (also named Oliver James), a musician who's been burned by the spotlight. Together they navigate the pressures of Henry's re-election campaign, the expectations of London society, and the question of whether Daphne should change herself to fit into her father's world or remain authentically herself.

Director Oliver Parker brings warmth and humor to this 2003 romantic comedy that celebrates individuality and genuine connection. Amanda Bynes delivers a breakout performance as Daphne, making her earnest, enthusiastic character genuinely endearing rather than annoying. The chemistry between Bynes and Oliver James (the actor, not the character) creates believable romance, while the relationship between Daphne and her father evolves with surprising emotional authenticity. Anna Chancellor brings maternal warmth, while the supporting cast of British politicians and society figures creates colorful contrast to Daphne's American exuberance. The film's London locations are gorgeously photographed, from Parliament to quaint countryside estates. The soundtrack features bubbly pop songs that capture the film's youthful energy. Ultimately, the film's message—that being true to yourself matters more than conforming to expectations—resonates with genuine sincerity rather than feeling preachy.
